TRENTON, N.J. – Gov. Christie Monday signed legislation protecting disabled residents of state-run facilities. Sponsored by Assemblyman Kevin J. Rooney, the new law (S3554/A5210) expands background checks on workers and agencies hired to care for residents.
“We must ensure that care providers are qualified and trustworthy,” said Rooney (R-Bergen). “Thorough background checks are essential to identifying those who may be a threat. It is crucial for the safety and well-being of our most vulnerable residents.”
Rooney’s bill reflects recommendations by the state auditor following a review of licensed residential programs serving people with developmental disabilities. It requires federal and state criminal background checks at least once every two years for residence operators or those who supervise care.
