Summer’s Coming…
This is a time for parents and caregivers of disabled
children and adults to remember to use sunscreen and carry a bottle of water
with you on your outings. Many disabled
people are on medication in various amounts depending on their impairments. Many medications cause sun sensitivity. A good sunscreen and a hat with a rim are
recommended to prevent burns to their sensitive skin and eyes.
Also, they must stay hydrated. There have been some tragedies by forgetting
something as simple as water. Many of
this population have wound up in the hospital due to dehydration and/or heat
stroke which can be very serious and lethal.
I know one boy who wound up with a tracheotomy after a long hike in the
park. Another boy wound up with non-stop
seizures or Status Epilepticus. A water
bottle with fresh, cold water would prevent this.
Many of these children and adults do not speak, so we have
to think for them and use good judgment.
For those who become forgetful due to caring for so many complex needs
of the disabled person, write it down.
Make a list of what to do and what should be remembered. Put a second list in your vehicle if you have
to. Eventually it will become second
nature to do this.
And, always, take care of yourself, use sunscreen on
yourself, and bring water for yourself too.
These special kids need you.
Have a great summer !
