The weather has been very unusual. As hardy as kids with autism seem to be, they
can get very sick. Over time their
immune system weakens from all the medication most of them take. They can’t often tell you that they are not
well and you have to depend on mother’s intuition. Kids with autism don’t often know what to
wear for temperature changes and need assistance to dress appropriately. Mothers and caregivers have to be alert daily
to make sure these kids dress according to the weather.
Keeping kids with autism on a well balanced diet, free of
any offending foods, can strengthen their immune system to resist germs and
illnesses. They must be kept clean and
tidy to help ward off germs in the environment.
Getting them on a schedule to wash their hands through the day will
help. Daily baths or showers are as
important as brushing teeth regularly.
A tip: Carry wipes or
wet, soapy wash clothes in a plastic bag to help keep clean on-the-go. It helps to carry an extra set of clothes in
the event of accidents.
These tips would take a little extra effort, but it will be
well worth it in the end.
